Visit to Wild Woodbury, Bere Regis, 26 June
Wild Woodbury is 170 hectares of ex-farmland owned for the last four years by Dorset Wildlife Trust. It is just outside Bere Regis. DWT have carried out restoration work on the river to produce an area suitable for wetland wildlife and has now introduced cattle, pigs and horses to create a mosaic of environments that will enable a large range of species to thrive. Since 2022 the number of recorded species of plants, animals, insects and fungi has risen from 1300 to 1900. These include four of the UK's six native reptiles and a wide range of birds of prey. 29 Red List bird species have been recorded, with 12 of them breeding. Regular tests have shown a decrease in fertiliser products and increased carbon storage. There is a waymarked walking trail and rights of way. GM has arranged a guide to explain in more detail the principles and practice of rewilding. There is a carpark. Time to be confirmed. Contact GM for more information and book a place - numbers are limited. Sorry we have not been able to make this a non-school/work day.
